In honor of this partnership, the center named one of its tracked sea turtles Engel, and her story is nothing short of inspiring.
Originally tagged on Juno Beach in April 2026, Engel was identified as a neophyte, meaning she had never been seen or tagged by researchers before. Despite missing part of her right front flipper, she successfully crawled ashore to lay her nest—a powerful reminder of the resilience of these incredible animals.
Researchers also noted Engel’s unusually large head, measuring over 10 inches wide, an impressive trait even among loggerheads. As part of an ongoing study, Engel was outfitted with a satellite transmitter to help scientists better understand sea turtle dive behavior and how it impacts their risk of boat strikes.
